Description

Manila represents a robust and reliable type of rope with a rich history that dates back a long time. These ropes are made from Manila fiber, a plant fiber known for its excellent properties.

Material and properties: Ropes have been made from Manila fibers for thousands of years and is still in use today.

  • Manila fiber: these ropes are often made in 3- or 4-strand construction, and the fiber, Manila fiber, derived from the Abaca plant, is named after the capital city of the Philippines, which was once the center for all Manila fiber exports. Manila fiber has better rot resistance than many other natural fibers due to its natural oil impregnation. It is also a stronger fiber than, for example, hemp and cotton.
  • Color and strength: The ropes have often been referred to as “ship rigging ropes” because of their use in maritime contexts. Manila ropes have a characteristic brownish color that gives them a rustic and natural appearance. They sink in water and have an elongation at break of approximately 15%.

Applications: Manila ropes are very versatile and have a wide range of applications.

  • Lead ropes: They are often used as lead ropes, which are ropes used to guide other ropes aboard ships or in other maritime applications.
  • Ship rigging: The “ship rigging” designation highlights these ropes’ traditional use in the marine industry, where they were used to make rigging and ropes for sailing ships. Manila ropes also play a significant role as lifeboat hoisting lines, where their strength and reliability are critical.
  • Decorations: Besides their practical uses, they are also used for decorative purposes, where their rustic and natural appearance provides an authentic touch to various projects.

Advantages: Manila ropes have a long history of use worldwide and have continued to be a favorite due to their strength and versatility. Their reliability and ability to resist rot make them an excellent choice for projects where durability is crucial and natural materials are required.
