Description
Tarred hemp is a 3-strand rope with specific characteristics and uses.
Material and properties: Tarred hemp is made from natural hemp yarns that have been treated with wooden tar.
- Aesthetics: tarred hemp ropes have a characteristic dark brown color but can also vary in appearance due to the natural variation of the hemp fiber color itself and also the type of tar used to treat the ropes.
- Water repellent: the tar was used traditionally to make the ropes more resistant to rot. This was achieved by the water repellent feature of the tar, which effectively prevents water to be absorbed byt he rope and thereby prolonging the life of the rope.
- Sinking: Tarred hemp absorbs less water than untreated hemp but will still sink in water. The elongation at break for this type of rope is typically around 15%.
Applications: Tarred hemp is primarily used in the decoration industry and for various types of sailor’s work. Examples of uses include:
- Decorative ropes: Tarred hemp is popular in the decoration world where its rustic appearance and natural feel make it suitable for various decorative purposes. It can be used to create artistic and rustic decorations and details.
- Sailor’s work: In traditional sailor’s work, tarred hemp has historically been used to make knots, ropes and other maritime accessories. Although modern materials have taken over in the maritime industry, there is still use for tarred hemp in more traditional or historical contexts.
Advantages: Tarred hemp is appreciated for its aesthetic value and characteristic scent and is often used to provide a rustic and authentic feel to various projects and decorations. Its natural appearance and dark brown color give it a unique character.
Tarred hemp is typically made as a 3-strand rope but is also available in 4-strand construction. In the past, natural hemp was treated with tar to better withstand moisture and wet conditions, which was especially important in maritime settings. Today, synthetic materials have taken over in maritime use, but tarred hemp is instead used for decoration and traditional sailor’s work. Its dark brown color and natural appearance give it a special charm that makes it in demand for certain design and craft projects.
