Shackles

Shackles are openable links, usually made of metal. There are essentially two main types of shackles, but they come in many different materials and variations.

  • Bow shackle: These shackles are shaped like a bow with a smaller opening than the bow itself. The shape provides even loading even when the direction of force changes.
  • DEE shackle: Also called D-shackles or sometimes U-shackles because they have the shape of a U.

Applications: Different types of shackles are used in various applications depending on a number of factors. Here are a few examples:

  • Linking together: Shackles are often used to link together two structures, for example, a chain with a rope.
  • Lifting & pulling: When lifting heavy loads or pulling with a winch, a shackle is typically used to connect the lifting device to the load.
  • Joint & coupling: A chain may need to be joined, or to create two legs in a Y-formation. The joint is made using a shackle. When combining several different types of materials in series, such as buoy or dock moorings with rope as part of the setup and chain for the remaining part, shackles are used to create a secure and strong joint between these different materials.

Advantages: Shackles are strong, secure and most importantly, openable links used for many different purposes. They come in various shapes, varieties and materials.

Description

Commercial shackles

Commercial shackles, which are galvanized and uncertified for lifting, are useful components intended for a wide range of applications. It is important to note that these shackles are not approved for lifting, meaning they should not be used in lifting or hoisting applications where safety is a primary concern.

Material and properties: Commercial shackles are available in three types of materials:

  • HDG: Hot-Dip Galvanized means the shackles are hot-dip galvanized with a corrosion-resistant zinc coating.
  • Stainless steel: typically made from AiSi 316 or AiSi 304 stainless steel, providing exceptional corrosion protection.
  • Brass: brass is a soft metal and brass shackles are used for decorative purposes or where steel cannot be used for various reasons.

Applications:

  • Anchoring floating docks/buoys: Galvanized commercial shackles are often used to secure and anchor floating docks and buoys in marine and water environments. Their corrosion resistance and ease of use make them a reliable choice for such applications.
  • Mooring: These shackles can be used for mooring boats and ships at docks or piers. They provide a secure and reliable link between mooring lines and fixed points, helping to secure boats effectively.
  • Industrial, forestry and fishing: Commercial shackles also have various uses in industrial, forestry and fishing applications. They can be used to connect, secure or link components and equipment within these industries.

It is important to follow the manufacturer’s recommendations and not use these shackles for lifting or hoisting applications requiring lifting approval. By using them correctly and within their specified applications, you can benefit from their versatility and durability in various industrial, marine and other areas.

Certified shackles

Certified shackles are high-performance components that have undergone quenching and tempering to meet stringent requirements for durability and reliability. These shackles are clearly marked with their maximum load capacity and are intended for a variety of applications where safety and reliability are critical.

Material and properties:

  • Safety factor 6:1: Certified shackles are designed with a safety factor of 6:1, meaning they are engineered to ensure a very high safety margin. This makes them suitable for use in demanding and high-risk situations.
  • Hot-Dip Galvanized (HDG): These shackles are hot-dip galvanized, meaning they have been treated with a zinc coating to enhance their resistance to corrosion and rust formation. This coating provides long-lasting durability even in challenging environments.
  • With nut or pin: Lifting shackles are available in two types differing in how the bolt is designed, either as a regular pin shackle or with a nut and bolt.

Applications:

  • Lifting: Certified shackles are suitable for various lifting applications where safety is paramount. They are often used with lifting equipment such as cranes and hoists to securely and reliably handle loads.
  • Mooring: Shackles are used to secure and anchor components and equipment across various industries including marine, construction, and industrial sectors. Their high safety factor and durability make them a reliable choice for keeping components in place.
  • Cargo securing: Classified shackles are also used for cargo securing, ensuring loads are safely secured during transport and movement. Their reliability and strength play a crucial role in ensuring that loads are transported safely and efficiently.

Certified shackles are a critical component in various industries where reliability and safety are paramount. Their high safety factor, quenching and tempering process, and hot-dip galvanized surface make them a versatile and durable solution for lifting, mooring, and cargo securing in demanding environments.
