Splicing guide
How to make an eye splice with a thimble
A splice keeps more of the rope's strength than a knot. Here is how to splice an eye around a thimble in 3-strand laid rope.

Step by step
- 1
Measure from the end a length of about five times the length of the thimble and mark it.
- 2
Whip or tape the rope hard at the mark so it does not unlay during splicing.
- 3
Unlay the rope back to the mark and tape the end of each strand, ideally in three colours.
- 4
Place the thimble in line with the tape and tuck the strand closest to you under a strand of the rope.
- 5
Turn the splice a quarter, open the rope and tuck strand two, then strand three. You now have a lock.
- 6
Repeat until each strand has been tucked five times. Pull on the strands to tighten the splice.
- 7
Cut the ends about 5 mm from the splice and, if you like, melt them with a lighter.
Good to know
Even a well-made splice reduces the breaking load by about 10%. A knot can reduce it by more than 50%.
